Quickstart:

Plugins require version 1.8 or higher
If you have a video file that gives errors, or if you have raw (uncompressed) avi or simply want to change to a different codec:
First load the file in question into virtualDUB, either by file>open or dragging and dropping from explorer. Under video>compression this will change the video codec, choose one (divx 5.1 is very popular). Next go under Audio>full processing mode. This will enable the audio>compression option. Choose the audio codec (I usually opt for mpeg layer 3). You will then have to choose from the box on the right for the bit rate and sampling frequency. 44100khz is generally considered cd/dvd quality (beyond the humans ear ability to discern the sampling). The lower on the list you go the smaller the file size and worse the quality will be.File>save as avi will save the file with the new compression settings. It may take some time depending on your computer.
to remove a bad section:
move to the spot to start your selection. You can do this by using the play button on the bottom. Hit stop when you get to the spot. You can also use the left and right arrow keys. hit home to place the start selection marker move the place setter to the end of the scene you wish to select. hit the end button. this will give you a selection of scenes. You can modify, filter, edit the selection or hit the delete button to remove the selection. You will have to save the edited video file, dont forget to set your desired audio and video compression as above.
file to big for your disc?
bring up the file in virtualdub, video >> filters click on the add button, choose 2:1 reduction(high quality). Now set your compression and your audio compression (see above). save the avi, now you have a file much smaller then the original.
